Guide to Gluten Free Beers

March 25, 2010

beer gluten
I thought I would continue my beer blogging. Beer, the oldest of beverages, is now available gluten-free. This is great news if you have sensitivities like redness, trouble breathing, and low blood pressure when consuming grains.

Now one should know that the bigger breweries have been scamming you with their modern cheaper alternative then the four usual ingredients. Budweiser is now made with 30% rice and Miller 30% corn. But remember health wise beer is one of the few products to truly spike our uric acid levels in our blood, which down the road creates obesity, insulin resistance, fatty liver disease, gout, etc.

Guide to Gluten-Free Beers

Bard’s Tale Beer –USA brewers with current distribution in 21 states, including Iowa, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Vermont. The owners are Celiacs and beer lovers themselves who are dedicated to keeping the beer experience alive for those who are committed to a gluten-free lifestyle.

Bard’s The Original Sorghum Malt Beer (formerly Dragon’s Gold) – Bard’s Tale Beer, USA – Golden amber with light white head, with the aroma and taste characteristics of a satisfying, finely crafted wheat beer. This beer is crafted with pure water, premium sorghum, hops and yeast, combined with buckwheat, natural honey, corn and rice. This is Real Beer for Real People.

Ramapo Valley Brewery – Located in beautiful Rockland County in New York, these folks travel to various conferences throughout the year, and offer their Gluten-free beer year-round.

Honey Beer (formerly Honey Passover Beer) – Ramapo Valley Brewery, USA – Bright golden in color, with a delicate honey and hops nose. Crafted with honey, molasses, Kosher yeast hops and pure, sparkling water, this gluten-free wonder has 5.2% ABV, a lighter taste and is dry at the finish. Kosher Certified for Passover

New France Beers– Canadian brewers with a commitment to ALL of their customers, they have dedicated three years to research and development of gluten-free beer centered on purity and taste.

La Messagère – New France Beers, Canada – A crystalline pale ale with light effervescence and froth of lacing that lightly webs the surface. The aroma and flavor of golden honey, kissed with citrus and wisps of hops. Brewed from rice and buckwheat. 4.7% ABV

Green’s – United Kingdom Company dedicated to serving the growing community of people being diagnosed with Celiac Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. New gluten-free products are being developed daily to serve this segment of the beer loving community.

Discovery Amber Ale – Green’s, United Kingdom – Hazy amber beer, like a glowing sunrise over the ocean, brewed in the European tradition with light, refreshing apple and hop bitterness. 6% ABV

Pioneer Lager – Green’s, United Kingdom – Golden amber lights with gentle cloudiness, flavors of dried apple and apricot, with an acidic finish. 5% ABV

Endeavour Double Dark Beer – Green’s, United Kingdom – Walnut brown, full-bodied, with flavors of roasted grain and dark fruit, akin to a cold fruit soup. Replaced Explorer Stout. 6% ABV

Beer Fast: Are You Man Enough?

March 24, 2010

beer
I once heard that if you were only allowed to eat only one food for the rest of your life, you should choose beer. With enough calories and fluids to sustain you – this would be the choice for longevity and you get to drink beer! But with further research this is totally preposterous, just read this Bukowski-esque story from Peter Thompson at Modern Drunkard.

You would most certainly need plenty of water to counteract the dehydration from the alcohol. Some alcoholics do live mostly on alcohol and eventually get very malnourished. Vitamins C and the B spectrum would severely be depleted. But the brewer’s yeast in beer would counteract this process as it’s high in protein, some B vitamins, phosphorus, and chromium. Chromium is crucial in processing glucose and could help counteract the LDL cholesterol flooding your arteries as your liver processes the ethanol. So maybe…

But another ingredient, hops, could also do some damage to men. There are trace levels of estrogen in beer, and it is the hops that are bringing in this hormone. Though the moobs that men who consume vast quantities of the brew like to sport, this may be more a factor of fat then estrogen. The jury is still out if the beer in estrogen (I’m drinking beer as I’m writing this so I’m going to leave this typo in for demonstrations sake) can lower men’s testosterone.

Aside from water, the last ingredient in beer is grain. The effects of gluten from the barley (or other grains) on sensitive immune systems is well documented. The most serious reactions are known as Celiac disease. Gluten can also trigger minor sensitivities and cause a histamine reaction (stuffy nose, redness, constriction of smooth muscle, asthma). And no doubt a prolonged exposure with a beer mono-diet could really reak havoc on your immune system.

So if you don’t mind losing your teeth, expanding your belly to an incredible berth, and turning your liver to fat – see if you can survive on beer and perhaps it will help what is “ale”ing you.
